Active citizens are individuals who engage with their communities, participate in democratic processes, and contribute to issues that extend beyond their personal lives. In Palestine, young people navigate complex realities shaped by the restrictions of the Israeli occupation as well as internal challenges that limit inclusive participation and weaken accountability. These conditions can deepen rights violations and reduce opportunities for meaningful civic engagement.
Sharek Youth Forum adopts a human rights–based approach across its programmes, placing youth at the center of sustainable, long-term change. We work to strengthen young people’s civic knowledge, leadership, and ability to participate in both formal and informal public life—supporting engagement at the local, national, and international levels. Through training, dialogue, and youth-led initiatives, participants develop the skills to advocate for their rights, influence policies, and contribute to more inclusive communities.
A core priority within our active citizenship work is the meaningful participation of young women. With women’s representation in decision-making roles remaining low, Sharek actively supports young women to build confidence, access civic spaces, and strengthen their roles as leaders and change-makers in their communities.
