Youth Initiative in Al-Kum Village – South Hebron
In the village of Al-Kum, located in the southern part of Hebron, a group of 15 young people, in collaboration with the Sharek Youth Forum, launched an inspiring environmental initiative. With great enthusiasm and teamwork, they dedicated their efforts to improving the public spaces of their community. The activities included cleaning the village’s main street, pruning and reshaping the existing trees to restore their vitality, and planting new trees that symbolize hope and continuity for future generations.
Al-Kum, home to over 1,400 residents, is one of the historic villages of the Hebron Governorate. It is distinguished by its archaeological significance, with roots that stretch back thousands of years, bearing witness to the region’s rich cultural heritage. However, despite this historical and cultural wealth, the village has been facing growing environmental and health challenges in recent years, particularly those related to pollution and waste management.
The initiative not only improved the physical appearance of the village but also represented a more profound message. It highlighted the spirit of volunteerism, generosity, and belonging that characterizes Palestinian youth. By taking action, the young participants proved that they are not merely observers of the problems around them, but active agents of change capable of protecting their environment and strengthening their community.
This small yet powerful effort served as a reminder that meaningful change often begins at the local level. Through their unity and sense of responsibility, the youth of Al-Kum sent out a clear message: they have the ability, determination, and vision to safeguard their environment, preserve their heritage, and pave the way for a healthier and more sustainable future for their village and beyond.
